Mount Vernon High School is proud to recognize a group of outstanding students who exemplify the school’s pillars of Building Community and Taking Ownership. Nominated by teachers and staff, these students have demonstrated leadership, perseverance, and a commitment to helping others both in and out of the classroom.Kennedy Kegley, a ninth-grade student nominated by teacher Bekie Smith, was praised not only for her academic diligence but for her commitment to uplifting others. Kennedy doesn’t just meet MVHS’s pillars of Building Community and Taking Ownership, she integrates them. While she is a diligent student who consistently delivers high quality work, her true strength lies in her ability to engage other students. Kennedy has a natural instinct for helping others succeed, often taking the time to answer questions and guide students, without giving them answers. In group settings, her patience is notable. Instead of becoming frustrated, Kennedy asks questions that help engage reluctant students. Despite her quiet nature, Kennedy’s willingness to help is loud and clear. She is not just a remarkable student; she is an amazing human being.
Lincoln Wilson, a tenth-grade student nominated by Lauren Townley, has made a significant impact as a student helper in Health & Physical Education. Lincoln has been a student helper for me the past two semesters in Health & PE. He has been very helpful whether it’s passing out papers in class or helping me set up / tear down the gym for PE, with very minimal complaints. He has also been helping out in Adaptive PE this year. The kids have really taken a liking to Lincoln & he is always very active with them, while making sure they are treated fairly & always making them laugh!
In the front office, Isla Graham, a tenth grader nominated by Julie Wallace. Isla serves as an office helper during first period and consistently demonstrates exceptional responsibility and professionalism. She is always punctual and prepared to begin her work. Her phone etiquette is outstanding—she handles calls with confidence, courtesy, and maturity, even when speaking with challenging callers. Isla has a wonderful ability to bring positivity and humor to the office while maintaining a high level of professionalism. She has been a tremendous addition to our office environment this year.
Kamryn VanValkenburg, a tenth-grade student nominated by Mr. Garrabrant, has emerged as a leader in the school’s choir program. Kamryn has stepped up in many ways this year. She has become a leader in the Alto section. She also became a study helper during Concert Choir. In this class she helps sort and put away music after concerts, she also has become the accompanist for Concert Choir. She was a part of 2 ensembles and took a solo in Class A to competition. Kamryn received a superior rating on her solo. She is working towards auditioning for the OMEA All-State Choir this spring, to sing with the group next winter at our convention. For a sophmore in our top group, she is really pushing herself to be the best choir member and singer possible and that compassion and drive is felt by others, including me. She is always encouraging others to audition for Chorale and musicals, or just be a part of the choir program in any way. I am grateful to have her as a student and proud of her excellent character she brings to the program.
Nominated by Grace Steele, ninth grader Jadin Weatherbee has shown remarkable personal growth this year. Jadin is someone who has done a complete 180 from the start of the year to now. She has truly embodied what it means to embrace growth and take ownership of herself and her learning. She has become more confident in herself as a student and it is reflecting in how she carries herself in class. She now participates and now helps those around her, and her grades are a reflection of this change. I am insanely proud of her (even if she acts like she doesn’t want me to be) and am so excited to see her continue to grow!!
Charlie Banks, also a ninth grader, was nominated by Becky Henthorn for his strong class participation and positive attitude. Charlie consistently demonstrates strong class participation and is always willing to answer questions. He positively contributes to class discussions and asks some interesting questions along the way. He takes ownership of his learning by being engaged in class and puts forth genuine effort to complete his assignments on time. Charlie’s positive attitude makes him a good role model for his peers and a valued member of my classroom.
In Chemistry, tenth-grade student Anderson Seng, nominated by Keith Norris, has demonstrated resilience and determination. Anderson has struggled at times in Chemistry this year but he has maintained a positive attitude and worked hard to improve. Anderson asks questions in class, comes in during HIVE and after school to correct and retake quizzes and tests. He almost always completes assignments and actively participates in labs and discussions even when he is not certain if he is working through the problem correctly.
Ninth grader Lyncon Berry, nominated by Don Foos, is recognized for his consistent engagement and respect for others. Lyncon is a student who is always engaged in his classroom activities and cares deeply about his academic progress. He enjoys participating in classroom discussions and is respectful of his peer’s ideas and opinions. Lyncon will help other students when he sees that they may need assistance, and he will volunteer to help his teachers with various tasks around the classroom.
These students represent the best of MVHS through their leadership, perseverance, and commitment to others. Their contributions strengthen the school community and set a powerful example for their peers.
