Mount Vernon’s Art Club pulls inspiration from a globally practiced project to help make a communal difference for our Jackets. On March 13, during the Forum Show, the Art Club will be collecting individually-wrapped snack donations for the Jacket Closet for students in need. As a way to garner more donations, they have The Empty Bowls Project, in which art students have crafted decorated bowls to give out.
“As a thank you gift for supporting our students, we are offering a clay bowl to those who bring in two or more snack items while supplies last,” Mrs. Gentry stated.
The project was inspired by a tradition, of the same name, in which artists around the world would create bowls for charities, and by the government shutdown in the fall, during which students reliant on SNAP benefits struggled.
“I hope that the bowls help bring awareness of the problem of hunger to our community,” senior Audrey Tooley commented.
The project is a good way for the school to mix the talents of our students with the needs of many others to help make a difference in the community.
“Seeing simple bowls turn into something that people started to put time and feeling behind was an inspiration in itself,” Tooley claimed.
If anyone who is attending the Forum Show on Friday wants a bowl hand-decorated by some of our student body or who just simply wants to support those in need within our school, come ready with snacks to give.
