Mount Vernon High School is welcoming back a familiar face to the science department this year, Mrs. Zimmerman. She is teaching freshman biology and physical science. Although she’s new to the classroom here, she’s no stranger to Mount Vernon.
“I’m originally from Mount Vernon,” she said. “What brought me back was coming back home.” After graduating from Mount Vernon High School herself, Mrs. Zimmerman attended college, got married, and spent several years traveling the country while her husband served in the Navy. Along the way, she taught at five other school districts before returning home to teach where her love for science began.
Mrs. Zimmerman has always been passionate about science. “I actually always liked science when I was a student,” she shared. “I took all the science classes I could while I was here.”
Although she once planned to go to veterinary school, her path eventually led her to teaching, something she now loves.
When she’s not in the classroom, Mrs. Zimmerman enjoys staying active and creative. “I like to lift weights and run a lot,” she said. “And I do a lot of crafting, like sewing and making quilts.”
One thing that stood out to her about Mount Vernon High School was the strong support system. “The administration and principals are all very visible and in contact with teachers and students daily,” she said.
This year, she’s especially excited for one particular biology lesson: dissections. “They were one of my favorite labs when I was a student,” she shared. “I’m really looking forward to doing them again in the spring.
As she settles into her classroom, Mrs. Zimmerman hopes to inspire her students to explore science with curiosity and confidence, just like she did when she walked the same halls years ago.
