Walking the halls of Mount Vernon High School one would never know accomplishments senior Emily Springer and freshman Lucia Burt have obtained.

Springer and Burt have been selected to perform in the Nutcracker, which was first performed in Russia in 1890.

For the first time the Central Ohio Youth Ballet Program will perform on the stage in the Woodward Opera House.

“I’m excited , nervous, and ready to show everyone what we’ve all worked so hard on for this show,” said Springer

In total, there are roughly 40 dancers ranging from ages eight to 23. The volunteer staff consists of the ballerinas’ parents.

Both dancers have put in over 100 hours into their practice, which consists of eight hour days every weekend. With this time they are beginning to learn more difficult ballet steps and are being taught pas de deux.

“It feels surreal, I get to share a work of art I’ve spent so much time on with my peers, family and friends,” said Burt.

This commitment takes up most of the girls’ free time due to the amount of work they are pouring into this performance to make it perfect. They are only required to be in the studio for those eight hours. But, more often than not both, will stay for many extra hours to get extra practice.

The Nutcracker, will take place on December 10 and 11 at The Woodward Opera House. Ticket information can be found at thewoodward.org
