Every Tuesday and Thursday, the sounds of laughter and bouncing basketballs echo through the gym—not just from a typical PE class, but from something much more meaningful. Thanks to the vision of Ms. Townley students in the Leadership HIVE have been given a chance to build friendships and create unforgettable memories with peers in the school’s special education program.
Ms. Townley created these special activity days as a way to bring students together in a space of fun, acceptance, and inclusion.
“I thought it was a good amount of the week for the kids,” Townley said. “Doing it more might have been overwhelming, but this way they stay active and form stronger connections with their friends.”
Each Tuesday and Thursday, a select group of students from Leadership HIVE heads to the gym to spend the period playing games, doing activities, and simply hanging out with students from the special education classes. What may look like a regular gym session on the surface has turned into something far more impactful.
For junior Dammon Wolfe, who’s been involved in the program for two years, the experience has been unforgettable.
“Just seeing them progress, and seeing them happy when they see us—it’s more than just playing. It’s about making them feel seen and included,” Wolfe shared with a smile. “Being around them just makes me happy.”
The special needs students echo that joy. One student grinned and said, “I like playing basketball with them. It makes me happy.”
It’s a simple statement, but one that speaks volumes. What began as a few hours a week has blossomed into real friendships—proof that sometimes, the smallest acts can have the biggest impact.
As the program continues, Ms. Townley and the students involved hope it will inspire others to find ways to bridge the gap, build empathy, and make inclusion a natural part of everyday school life.
Because in the end, it’s not just about basketball or gym class—it’s about making everyone feel like they belong.
