At Mount Vernon High School, a gaming group has taken the student body by storm. What began as a small circle of friends has exploded into a 47-member clan that blends fierce competition with school pride and a strong sense of community.
The clan was founded by sophomore Gabe Kiser, who wanted to unite students through their shared love of the popular mobile game Clash Royale. Alongside him is Brayden McCullough, his right-hand man and co-leader.
“Brayden has been a huge help leading the team.”
From just a handful of friends, the team quickly grew by using some creative recruitment tactics. Kiser and McCullough created colorful propaganda posters and visited classrooms to find new players.
“With the use of propaganda signs and going from classroom to classroom, the clan quickly grew,” Kiser said.
What sets the team apart from other gaming clans? Kiser points to their size, dedication, and impressive trophies.
“Other clans are weak compared to us. They don’t have 47 members or high trophies like we do,” he boasted.
The group isn’t just about numbers—they each bring their own style and personality to the game.
“It doesn’t have many strengths, but it has a lot of heart,” Kiser said.
Of course, being a top player comes with its challenges. Staying motivated through losing streaks can be tough.
“The hardest part is keeping myself motivated through the ups and downs that Clash can bring, like a 10-game losing streak,” junior Fritz Johnson.
But the pressure also pushes members to improve—not only in the game but in life.
“Yes, I feel like I need to live up to my name. It motivates me in many aspects of my life, not just Clash,” said Kiser.
For Johnson, the clan’s top trophy holder, Clash Royale is more than just a game.
