With the everyday use of TikTok, Pinterest, and YouTube, there has been a noticeable rise in the classification of lifestyles, often referred to as “aesthetics.” By definition, aesthetics are “a set of principles concerned with the nature and appreciation of beauty, especially in art.” However, the term has taken on new meaning in the digital age, where it has become a way for individuals—particularly those aged 14-28, or Gen Z—to express their identity and sense of belonging.
Popular aesthetics such as cottagecore, dark academia, soft girl, and old money have emerged as defining trends, particularly since the cultural shift brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. These aesthetics have grown beyond mere clothing choices, becoming immersive identities that encompass the environments people create and the mindsets they adopt. An aesthetic, in this sense, is more than just a style—it’s a “vibe” or “aura” that resonates deeply with its adherents.
In public settings, it’s easy to spot these aesthetics reflected in cliques, fashion choices, and even the media people consume. The appeal of aesthetics lies in their ability to foster a sense of community, with shared values and creative expression drawing individuals together. However, the impact of aesthetics isn’t purely positive. While they inspire creativity and self-expression, they can also be limiting or overly prescriptive, confining people to narrowly defined categories.
At Mount Vernon High School, a small sample survey revealed interesting insights into how students engage with aesthetics. When asked to define their aesthetic, most struggled to choose a specific label, identifying instead with a combination of styles or a more general approach. This suggests that while aesthetics are influential, many young people prefer flexibility over strict adherence to a single category.
One common thread, however, was the influence of Pinterest. The vast majority of students reported from the sample size admitted to using the platform, which functions as a digital mood board where users can save images related to nearly anything—outfits, travel destinations, collages, photo ideas, and more. Pinterest has become a key tool for visualizing and exploring personal aesthetics. For many, it’s not just about adopting a particular style, but about setting goals and imagining their best selves.
While some may feel caught between the boundaries of defined aesthetics, this trend offers a fascinating lens through which to view modern art, culture, and human interaction. Through platforms like TikTok, Pinterest, and YouTube, aesthetics have become an evolving, collective form of self-expression—one that continues to shape how individuals see themselves and connect with others in a digital world.
