The Big Sibs program at Mount Vernon High School is an initiative that fosters meaningful connections between high school students and their middle school peers. Designed to nurture mentorship and friendship, the program selects high school students to serve as trusted guides, offering support and encouragement to middle schoolers.
Through consistent interactions, Big Sibs help their “Little Sibs” develop social skills, build new friendships, and find a reliable role model. These relationships go far beyond surface-level connections, often evolving into bonds that leave a lasting impression on both the mentors and the mentees.
Grace Humphrey, a dedicated Big Sib, shares her experience: “Big Sibs has been very beneficial for both me and my Little. I’ve loved getting to know her and seeing her grow as an individual. The program has also helped me foster compassion toward others.”
Similarly, Rylee Myers reflects on the program’s impact, saying,
This December, the program is organizing a special outing to Altitude Trampoline Park, followed by a festive “mini Christmas” celebration. As part of the festivities, each Big Sib will present their Little Sib with a personalized gift, thoughtfully chosen to reflect their unique connection. These holiday activities will further deepen the relationships between participants, creating lasting memories for all involved.
While some may view the program as a simple social initiative, its impact reaches far deeper. The Big Sibs program empowers middle schoolers to step out of their comfort zones, build trust, and embrace new opportunities. By instilling confidence and fostering meaningful relationships, the program equips them with essential life skills that will serve them well beyond their school years.
Christine Keaton, the program’s teacher supervisor, highlights the profound importance of the initiative: “The Big Sibs program is incredibly dear to my heart. Over the last nine years, I’ve had the privilege of watching more than 160 high school students selflessly commit to mentoring middle schoolers. Their dedication confirms this truth: our future is paved with goodness, graciousness, and generosity. In my experience, humanity longs to be seen, heard, and known, and these young adults have made that a reality for so many.”
The Mount Vernon High School Big Sibs program is more than a mentoring initiative—it’s a community where friendships flourish, empathy grows, and personal development is celebrated. It’s a testament to the power of connection and the lasting impact of kindness.
