The Mount Vernon FFA competed at the Knox County Soils contest on September 24th. 33 students competed. The competition consisted of two teams: Rural Soils and Urban soils teams.
The Rural Soils team consisted of 11 students. These students assess the soil’s agricultural potential, including its suitability for cropping, conservation, pastures, and forestry. They consider factors like the slope, drainage, and root restrictive layers.
The Urban team consisted of 19 students. These assess the soil’s suitability for development, including its ability to support roads, lawns, gardens, landscaping, septic systems, and home-building sites.
The Rural soils team consisted of Kira Burgess, Ansley Daubenmier, Brooklyn Dovenbarger, Ryan Fletcher, Bryce Hollenback, Irelynn Moffatt, Ava Moore, Jaxon Plumly, Madison Seng, Sadie Taylor, and Izzy Barron.
The Urban Soils Team consisted of Calleigh Armstrong, Wyatt Croghan, Kihana Edwards, Miles Fawcett, Nate Fletcher, Avery Hodges, Ethan Hurlow, Noah Malachewski, Chloe Salser-Brokaw, McKenna Miller, Phoebe Mussard, Noah Lewis, Alex Lodahl, Simon Ruprecht, Alivia Scoles, Anderson Seng, Caleb Snyder, Colton Stagg, Aubrie Welch, Daymian Sheets, and August Vance.
The Rural Soils team placed 4th with a score of 1656 and the Urban Soils team placed 1st with a score of 1769
