The Mount Vernon High School FFA (Future Farmers of America) showcased their forestry skills at the county forestry competition held at the Garrett and Linda Swendal farm in Danville
The event challenged participants to demonstrate their expertise in timber cruising, an essential forestry skill that involves evaluating the potential of trees for logging.
Competitors were tasked with identifying 10 different tree species and using specialized DBH (Diameter at Breast Height) tape to accurately measure the trees’ width. Additionally, they were required to calculate how many 16-foot logs each tree could produce and assess the overall value of the timber.
Among the Mount Vernon team, three students stood out for their top scores. Kiara Burgess led the team with an impressive score of 39, followed by Aubrie Welch with 37, and Nate Fletcher with 34.
Next up for the forestry division is the District Forestry Contest, which will take place on September 10th. The team is eager to continue their success and represent Mount Vernon at the next level of competition.
Students participating were -Ryan Fletcher, Irelynne Moffat, Kiara Burgess, Jaxon Plumly, Devontae Williams, Nate Fletcher, Wyatt Croghan, Aubrie Welch, Kameron Poole, Colton Stagg, Logan Daubenmier, Ethan Hurlow, Zeva Sheets, and Kihana Edwards.
